About Us

Each of our tours are led by expert historians and authors, local guides, and educators deeply connected to the subject at hand. Painstakingly organized itineraries make the most of our multi-day outings, which frequently include visits to state and federal parks, museums, and off-the-beaten-track venues, as well as privileged access to private property. Our tours go deeper than most, and aim to satisfy the interests of dedicated students and casual history buffs alike. Discussions of the best literature on the subject (for all interest levels), combined with stops at lesser-known locales, round out these educational and entertaining adventures.

David Woodbury earned a bachelor's degree in History from the University of Evansville, in Indiana. He pursued a long career in publishing, beginning as co-founder of Savas Woodbury Publishers (now Savas Beatie), followed by a decade with Stanford University Press. From 2004 to 2019 he was on staff at Cengage Learning in San Francisco. He is the editor of Talking about History: Historians Discuss the Civil War (2014), and was a principal contributor to and cartographer for the Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference. David has organized group visits to America’s Civil War battlefields for over 25 years, a tradition that developed out of years of managing an online study group, the CompuServe Civil War Forum. Starting in 2018, Woodbury Historical Tours expanded their tour offerings into other areas, including Indian Wars, and themes and events related to the American West, including the unique, Civil War to Cold War in New Mexico (2019). Tours under development will explore the world of the Ancestral Puebloans, the Lewis and Clark Trail, and the California Gold Rush. The inaugural Little Bighorn Symposium, featuring authors and historians on the Great Sioux War, will be held in September of 2023.
