ADDED: a talk on Colonel Allen Allensworth and his town. Allensworth escaped slavery during the Civil War and joined the Union Navy. He was later instrumental in the founding of Allensworth, a historic California town—a western refuge—financed and governed by African Americans (now a jewel in the California State Park system). Friends of Allensworth President Sasha Biscoe will deliver a presentation on this "seldom heard" chapter of California and United States history.
The conference will begin with a reception and short program Friday evening, followed by two full days (Saturday & Sunday) of intriguing talks distilled from some of the most fascinating and important scholarship about the Civil War era.
The full program, with synopses of talks and weekend schedule, will be posted here soon
